What started out as a disturbing story of neglect is moving toward a happily ever after for a dog abandoned in Kentucky.
“[Nike] was left along the side of a road with a bag of food and his toys and he’s only about 8-months old, 8-9 months old and he was hit by a car,” HART Animal Rescue representative Shari Wyenandt said. Once found in Kentucky, rescuers transferred to the dog to the care of HART, located in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Nike had two broken femurs and, currently, is unable to stand on his own. He first underwent surgery from doctors in Kentucky. Unfortunately, Nike was not healing properly. So, when he arrived at County Animal Hospital in Ohio they performed a second two-and-a-half hour surgery.
Dr. Gary Smith of County Animal Hospital said, “We think he was hit by a car and he broke both the growth plates on both knees, painful — and he couldn’t walk.”
This brave pup has a long road to recovery. But, it will be made easier with the help of water therapy. Doggie Paddles, a Kentucky-based organization, offered to give Nike free physical therapy once he is cleared by his doctors. This harrowing story started with the unthinkable. But Nike demonstrated a dog’s resiliency and his caretakers showed compassion. With the love of a foster family and the support of a medical community, Nike is on his way to healing.
